TB R&D Weekly Update: Latent TB Treatment in HIV and Children

In the July 7 issue of the New England Journal, two articles and an editorial on latent TB and TB prevention are published. One study discusses positive results on a treatment for latent TB in HIV-infected persons. The other study discusses negative findings that isoniazid is not effective in latent treatment of tuberculosis in children regardless of HIV status. Announcement: World-Renowned Pulmonologist Michael Iseman Joins Oxford Immunotec

Announcement: Promising TB vaccine candidate progresses to Phase I clinical trials

The MTBVAC01 vaccine candidate, developed to protect people against tuberculosis, will start Phase I clinical trials early in 2012. This was announced by the Spanish biopharmaceutical company Biofabri. The candidate was developed by the University of Zaragoza, Spain and is part of the international portfolio of TuBerculosis Vaccine Initiative (TBVI). Tuberculosis causes almost two million deaths per year.

Private TB Drug Market is Larger than Expected

The first detailed study of the private tuberculosis (TB) drug market, published on May 4th, in the PLoS ONE journal, finds that the market is surprisingly large, and has irregular practices that could be driving treatment failures and contributing to the emergence of multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB).

CNN News Coverage and FIND Presentation on Rapid TB test, Xpert MTB/RIF

CNN featured TB diagnostic Xpert MTB/RIF in its Inside Africa program and looked at the implementation of Xpert MTB/RIF in Uganda. In addition, the CORE Group hosted an online presentation on Xpert MTB/RIF from Elizabeth Talbot, Associate Professor of Infectious Diseases and International Health at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, and Medical Scientist, FIND: Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics. Results of a survey of their TB Working Group listserv also is included.

Stop TB Partnership’s Coordinating Board Meets in DC

Today was the opening of the 2-day Stop TB Partnership’s Coordinating Board (CB) meeting in Washington, D.C. which included welcoming remarks by Dr. Rajiv Shah (Administrator, USAID), Ms. Lois Quam (Executive Director, GHI), and Dr. Howard Koh (Assistant Secretary, U.S. Depart. of HHS).
