TB R&D Weekly Update: Podcast Interview with Armand Van Deun

This week’s interview is with Dr. Armand Van Deun who was the recipient of the 2010 Stop TB Partnership-Kochon Foundation prize. Last year, Dr. Van Deun, et al., published an article in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine entitled “Short, highly effective, and inexpensive standardized treatment of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis”. In the interview, we discuss this article which presents the results of an observational study in Bangladesh of a treatment for multidrug-resistant TB that incorporates fourth-generation fluoroquinolone combined with other second-line drugs and supplemented by potentially still active first-line drugs. Private TB Drug Market is Larger than Expected

The first detailed study of the private tuberculosis (TB) drug market, published on May 4th, in the PLoS ONE journal, finds that the market is surprisingly large, and has irregular practices that could be driving treatment failures and contributing to the emergence of multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB).

TB R&D Weekly Update: Combined Isoniazid and Antiretroviral Therapy Protects HIV-infected Children

In this week’s TB R&D update, the focus is on pediatrics and tuberculosis with several studies published on the subject. Frigati, et al., wanted to determine if isoniazid preventive therapy (IPT) combine with antiretroviral therapy (ART) would reduce TB in HIV-infected children. The article is published online ahead of print this month in Thorax and is entitled “The impact of isoniazid preventive therapy and antiretroviral therapy on tuberculosis in children infected with HIV in a high tuberculosis incidence setting.” Also, links to additional news in TB R&D are included.

New Report on Drugs for Drug-resistant TB

The Médecins Sans Frontières and The Union will release on World TB Day a new report entitled “DR-TB drugs under the microscope” outlining drugs currently available to treat drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) including product information, sources of the drug, quality status, and price.

TB R&D Weekly Update: Recommended Dose of Pyrazinamide Could Be Inadequate

In this week’s TB R&D update, we look at the whether higher does of pyrazinamide may result in better treatment outcomes for TB patients. The research is published at the end of January online ahead of print in the Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy journal and is entitled “Dose-dependent activity of pyrazinamide in animal models of intracellular and extracellular tuberculosis.” Also, links to additional news in TB R&D are included.
