TB R&D Weekly Update: ICAAC and TB Drug Clinical Workshop

On September 16, the 4th International Workshop on Clinical Pharmacology of Tuberculosis Drugs was held adjacent to the Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC) which was held from September 17 to 19. Between the two meetings, there were many updates related to TB drug development. Additional links to TB R&D are included.

TB R&D Weekly Update: Zinc Used by Host to Fight TB

This week, we provide an brief overview of research supported by CNRS, INSERM, Institut Pasteur and other donors providing new evidence of the role of Zinc in the body’s immune response to intracellular infection by M.tb. and the microbe’s strategy to subvert this defense. WHO Alarmed by Rising Rates of Drug-Resistant TB in Europe

Yesterday, BBC News published an article on the WHO Plan entitled “Consolidated action plan to prevent and combat multidrug- and extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis in the WHO European Region 2011–2015.” The plan outlines the problem as well as a solution that could save 120,000 lives if successful.

We invite you to join us for the Stop TB Partnership Working Group on New Drugs’ Annual Meeting 2011 at the Grand Palais in Lille, France, on October 26. Also, we are sponsoring a dinner on October 25 at Le Barbue d’Anvers in Lille to allow our Sub-groups (Biology/Targets, Candidates, Critical Knowledge and Tools, and Clinical Trial Capacity) to meet and plan for activities for 2012. Please make plans to attend both events.

New TB Materials and Tools Available!

Over the last week, some announcements have been released concerning new tools, publications and meeting materials that may be of value to the TB community including materials from the WGND sponsored “Essentiality of Pyrazinamide” Workshop, an interactive map of clinical trials from PACTR, and a new Collaborative Framework for Care and Control of Tuberculosis and Diabetes from the WHO and The Union.

TB R&D Weekly Update: New Target Identified for Pyrazinamide

This week we highlight an article published out of Ying Zhang’s laboratory at Johns Hopkins University that puts forth a new model for the mode of action of pyrazinamide (PZA) and as well as suggest trans-translation as a potential target to consider in the development of new drugs for TB. Updated WHO guidelines on Drug-Resistant TB
