Statement:
My long-standing research interest extends from my PhD studies to my current work. During this journey, I have developed a comprehensive view of the intricate nature of drug discovery and development. I began studying how Mycobacteria overcome antibiotic activity using intrinsic determinants of drug resistance, such as efflux pumps. During my post-doctoral studies I deepened the understanding of the physiological roles of these naturally occurring resistance systems and their potential implications for drug development. I finally integrated this accumulated knowledge to devise a multi-step screening program to identify compounds that would target these systems and thus devise new TB treatments. With this novel approach, new leads are continuously generated, feeding a pipeline of promising therapeutic options. More recently, and continuing with my translational research journey, I have obtained funding for initial pre-clinical studies of lead synergistic combinations.
In summary, my research interest aims to embrace the entire process from the bench to the clinic, thus having a social impact, the most ambitious outcome of every translational research program. Being a member of the Working Group on New TB Drugs would allow me to participate in a vibrant community at the leading edge of innovation and being able to interact with the most talented people working on TB drug development.
