I have been interested in diseases related to atypical mycobacteria. We now appreciate that mycobacterial diseases are associated with deficiencies of innate immunity. I am pursuing therapies that enhance innate immunity for the treatment of non-tuberculosis mycobacteria. Prior clinical studies with a synthetic hormone that enhances innate immunity has shown therapeutic efficacy against M. tuberculosis in both animal and human clinical trials. It is my firm belief that a more effective therapy for Tuberculosis and other mycobacterial diseases will involve combined treatment with both antibiotics and a drug that enhances immunity. We are trying to organize a pilot study at this time.
