Christian Lienhardt Discusses the Newly Launched TB-PACTS Database

Christian Lienhardt, from WHO, discusses the launch of TB-PACTS, the new data-sharing platform for TB clinical trials. This marks the beginning of an exciting new tool in the fight against TB. Announced on April 18th, TB-PACTS combines clinical trial data from Critical Path Institute (C-Path), the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR), TB Alliance, and St. George’s, University of London. Hosted on the C-PATH website, it strives to standardize all Phase III tuberculosis clinical trial data.

A Slight Chemical Alteration Makes a TB Drug More Effective

Tuberculosis continues to become more resistant to existing drug regimens resulting in a need for constant innovation on the part of drug researchers. In an article published by Medicalxpress.com which can be found here, researchers are reported to have found a chemical alteration that makes fluoroquinolones, an existing group of TB-fighting drugs, more effective against drug resistant TB.

Without a clear investment plan and a complete overhaul in how this disease is tackled, TB is unlikely to be eliminated until the end of the 22nd century, and the world will miss the recently announced Sustainable Development Goal to end TB by 2030.
